Best vegan restaurant in London -- Romance Edition!

It's our second time in London as a married couple, but now we're vegan. Recommendations for a lovely night out for just the two of us?

Does what it says on the animal product-free tin. Our vacation flat is in Brixton, and I'd like to plan a date night for two--we've lots of friends to see in London whilst we're there so at night, "us time" might be scarce--with seeing The Woman in Black at Fortune Theatre afterwards.

Where do you suggest? Are there any places that vegan-friendly (because I'm not expecting all possible places to be)? For an idea of what I mean, the last time we were in the UK in 2010, we ate an amazing meal at River Cafe, so something along that level but maybe not price tag would be ideal.

Thanks!

I'm not vegetarian / vegan but have alway quite fancied going to Vanilla Black, however then location isn't ideal for Brixton or the theatre.

Franco Manca in Brixon Market is a amazing pizza place, might be worth seeing if the menu works for you. Lots of other options in the market too.

Best answer: manna!

It's England's oldest vegetarian restaurant and it is just ridiculously good. Seasonal menus, 100% vegan, entrees are about £15. It's in Primrose Hill near the Chalk Farm (Northern Line) tube stop, which is a ~45 minute trek from Brixton, but only ~25 minutes from Covent Garden. My stomach is growling just thinking about it!

Mildred's is delicious, vegetarian and has vegan options. Soho is a few stops up on the tube from Brixton.

If you're out and about one night, trying to pick a vegan-friendly place on the fly, HappyCow can be really useful. The map interface allows you to see options in the nearby area. In my experience it's not the best at offering amazing special meals, but it is invaluable in finding a pub or local restaurant with something more than a side garden salad with italian dressing.

Best answer: Go to Amico Bio beside the Barbican. Book a table and make sure to try their homemade trio of vegan ice creams.

Also try the walnut miso udon at Koya in Soho.

We were in London this past summer and had excellent, romantic, vegetarian meals at Vanilla Black (as mentioned above), Odette's (in Primrose Hill), and Hakkasan (Hanway Place/Fitzrovia/near Tottenham Ct Rd tube). I believe the items we had were largely vegan--definitely worth checking out their menus and/or calling to determine their vegan options. So yummy, I cannot wait to go back to London to visit all of them! Enjoy!

Best answer: I'm a Vegetarian who visited London earlier this year. My partner and I had a very nice silver service lunch at http://www.vanillablack.co.uk/. The food was great and it was classy.

Not a restaurant, but if you're vegan and in Brixton you have to visit Ms. Cupcake. I think it's the law or something.

Response by poster: Believe me, we've done our research via Happy Cow--and I rely on Happy Cow heavily for travel--I just wanted some actual "hey, MeFites have been there!" suggestions for a nice meal.

(And as a vegan baker, you bet your sweet bippy, I'm-a go to Ms. Cupcake!!)

Best answer: Not strictly a vegan restaurant, but Woodlands is a fantastic vegetarian restaurant with a couple locations across London. The Hampstead location is very nice, romantic, convenient to the Tube, convenient to Hampstead Heath. A great experience both with a bunch of people, and a just-the-two-of-us dinner

The Gate in Hammersmith is where I take people to convince them that vegetarian and vegan food can be diverse and delicious. I live in North London near Manna and Woodlands, but for me, The Gate is a level above. They seem to have a new branch near Angel, but I haven't tried it.
