Great NY hotels for families?

What are some great New York hotels with rooms good for a family of four (two adults, two kids)? Preferably in Manhattan, preferably in a cool area, and preferably cool architecture/design.
Conrad in Battery Park meets the architecture requirement and has a separate bedroom and living area. I think it used to be an Embassy Suites. Also on the pricey side.

Do you have a budget in mind? The Conrad is great and meets the room requirement, but the neighborhood is near the financial district, so it's not the hippest place ever. However, there's a Shake Shack and the fabulous North End Grill nearby for food, and some great areas to walk around by the waterfront with kids.
The W in Union Square might be another good option - I'm pretty sure they have rooms with sofabeds. It's inside of a former bank building with beautiful architecture, and the ballroom on the second floor has restored ceilings from the original. It's really centrally located and you can get pretty much anywhere from there very easily.
Both of these hotels are not cheap, though, so if you have a budget in mind that would be helpful to know.

Yeah the budget is going to be the main determinant here. Hotels in NYC are very expensive.
The W Hotel is a good one, so is the Ace Hotel. The Ritz-Carlton, the Carlyle (on the Upper East Side), the St. James (also on the Upper East Side) all have cool architecture. All are very expensive.

Response by poster: Great suggestions so far, thanks. The budget is in the 300-500 dollar a night range.

The Waldorf Astoria! It's got classic architecture and interior design, it's in midtown, minutes from Grand Central and tons of subways, so convenient for getting around, and most rooms I've had there have had a sofa, or you could get a room with 2 queen beds (depending on how comfortable your kids would be with that)

Tryp by Wyndham, at Times Square South. Their family rooms are HUGE and prices can be extremely reasonable, if you check out sites like Expedia and such. Also looks pretty cool!
Have also had good experiences with the Affinia Dumont too - though not as 'hip', the rooms are very large for the money.

Ditto the TRYP by Wyndham. I've stayed there--huge, enormous, GIANT rooms for NYC. Clean, friendly, and really convenient.

We just got back last week from staying at Hotel Beacon on Broadway on the Upper West Side and it was quite nice. We had a suite with a good sized bedroom and very spacious sitting room and a very small but usable kitchen. The bathroom was on the small side but not too bad. The front desk people were not particularly personable but they were polite and attentive.
There is a really neat looking older building diagonally across the street as well as Fairway Market directly across the street and also a drugstore right nearby. The subway station is just a 1-2 minute walk away.
It's in a pleasant neighborhood. Our room rate was about $350 (but taxes added roughly enough $50).
