Good Online RPG for an 8-year old

Looking for an online RPG that's age appropriate for an 8-year old. Fantasy worlds, dungeon crawling, D&D style would seem a good fit. Does such a thing exist?

He already plays on kid-friendly Minecraft servers like Intercraften, and he really enjoys that. Are there any similar concepts in the online RPG world? (i.e. monitored or filtered chat, moderators keeping an eye on things etc.)

Take a look at Wizard 101 (Harry-Potter-esque fantasy) or Pirate 101 (pirate themed fantasy.) They're very strong, popular games aimed at kids, with appropriate communication restrictions. They're also free-to-play, which is lovely for everyone.

Another vote for Wizard 101 - my kids have played that and liked it a lot.

If you're willing to go the non-D&D route, Club Penguin is pretty fantastic. Poptropica is also great, and seemingly endless. All very safe, with monitored chat as well as ultimate "locked down" chat (the kids can chat but only using words from pre-approved lists, no typing).

Can your 8-year-old appreciate retro vintage goodness? Because there are few D&D style dungeon crawling RPGs more fun for the whole family than Angband. Can't beat the price either.

Free Realms is basically in the same bucket as Wizard 101.

Full disclosure- I work for this company, but Roblox has a lot of RPGs, most of them user-created. Dungeon Delver, for example, is a game created by a user on our site. And our site is moderated, COPPA compliant, and mostly aimed at 8-13 year olds.

Runescape. Last I checked that was about the right age range. Maybe a little more World of Warcraft-lite, running in a web browser.
