What are the major American movie studios?

How many movie studios in America are capable of producing films with production budgets over $100 million and how are they ranked from most to least profitable?
The thing is, that doesn't tell you as much as you'd think. The majors have less importance to the process than ever, with nominal independents such as Legendary Pictures (e.g. Pacific Rim) or Lionsgate (The Hunger Games) being the originating studio for more and more big films, with the majors only coming into play as distributors (although this does often mean upfront investment).
I don't know if this is gospel, but I have the sense that the teaming up of Fox and Paramount on Titanic brought about a new level of flexibility on this co-op deals. There is much more shopping around in this environment. Meanwhile, you have Marvel and DC essentially doing their own movies, almost deigning to let Disney and Warners come along for the ride, but exercising it would seem not much in the way of control.
In short, Hollywood is a land of contrasts.
