Chicago City Sticker no-fee purchase locations

Purchased a new vehicle on June 7th of this year. According to the law I have to purchase my city sticker by July 7th; tried going online to purchase but that only works for existing vehicle renewals. It appears that the majority of locations that sell stickers are currency exchanges that charge a 5.50 service fee.

The only exception I see is the Chicago City of Finance office, but the hours and location are very difficult for me to make. Is there any other option to purchase without paying the service fee? Is that essentially what these currency exchanges are paying for the "right" to do?

I believe that some banks will also sell the stickers, and since they're not sketchy exchanges, might have less/no fees.

Your local alderman's office might be an option, though their hours probably don't work either.

If you're lucky, you didn't already miss the ward sale at your local alderman's office.

You can buy them online and it'll be mailed to you. There's currently a 15 day grace period you managed to fall into, CPD won't be ticketing until the 15th according to this article.

No, you can only buy online if your vehicle is already in the City Clerk's database. It's really only for renewals.

You can also get a new city sticker at City Hall. Not sure of the hours, and it may not be any more convenient than going to the Finance office, but that's basically your only other fee-free option. The banks charge the same fee as the currency exchanges. (Ward sales are, like online sales, only for renewals.)

Yeah I went downtown last time I was approaching deadline. Pretty quick.

You actually can buy the sticker online if it's not a renewal. There's one additional step involved for non-renewals, though, which is to email the salient details to the office of the city clerk. This is what I did for my new vehicle this year, and it was about a half-day turnaround for them to get back to me and enter it into the system, providing me with a record to click on so I could purchase it online.

It appears this is no longer on the website as an option--maybe because we're already past the deadline. You could give it a shot anyway though! You can contact them at clerk.vehicle@cityofchicago.org. You need to include an attachment of a document that includes the vehicle's VIN, as well as your full name, current address, license plate state and license plate number. Good luck!
