What kind of Toad is this?

We have a toad (we think) ... or maybe a frog? Can you help identify it?

This fine fellow is living under our deck. He comes out to sun himself several times a day - we've not had an amphibian this large hanging out before - we think he is about 7 inches around his rather portly middle. He is a toad, not a frog, right? Does anyone know what kind?

I'm betting a Woodhouse's toad.

And, he's a handsome fellow....

Definitely a toad, although I'm unsure which kind. You can tell because he's all bumpy, but also because toads tend to like more damp, dark areas while frogs tend to like actual water.

A frog at rest will tend to be right near the shore of some body of water, whether a lake or a creek or something of that kind. They don't like to be very dry. Meanwhile, toads tend to not like being IN water, just where it's damp.

(At least, these are my observations from years of being at my parents' cottage with both frogs and toads in the area.)

Best answer: There are only two toad species in the wild in Oregon, and only one of them is easy to find: Bufo boreas or the western toad. They have a wide range of coloration, but usually have a lengthwise stripe, like yours does.

Mod note: Yup, it's a pretty sweet toad, but please only comment if you can help hilaryjade find an answer. Thank you.
