Male sex toys

I'm curious about varying up my solo sex life as a male, probably with toys.
The details re: me:
I'm a 24 year old male, straight, with an average sex drive dulled by Effector but still functional enough I can enjoy sex with my girlfriend.
I've been curious about if I can find anything to better enjoy sex when I'm alone. I've played with cock rings. I'm hoping to find a sex toy to vary my masturbation. I've browsed around Babeland and smitten kitten, and nothing really jumped out at me.
I'm hoping to find something discreet and low maintenance. I don't live alone, so something that would require cleaning beyond a rinse in my bathroom sink is out.
I've tried prostate play, but I think I've been doing it wrong as I never got much out of it.
I'm asking via sock puppet, so I can come back if I get any questions.

The Aneros product descriptions make me wish I had a prostate.

A guy I knew swore the Rude Boy was the best thing ever.
Disclaimer: I'm female, so I can't vouch for this myself. However, he was extremely enthusiastic about it.

From one sock puppet to another: I've had the same curiosity about improving alone time. I've been kind of jealous of the assortment of toys and methods available to women.
I can highly recommend Tenga Eggs. Supposedly meant to be disposed of after one or a few uses, but I've had good luck rinsing and air-drying. Amazon sells them in various textures or in variety packs.
I've also had good experiences with a high-powered bullet vibrator. Where and how to use it is mostly a personal matter (for me it's the frenulum).

I don't know how discrete this would be or what the clean up requirements are, but if I was a guy, I'd be all over this Realtouch.

As a guy, I will let that nowhere near my penis.

I bought Tenga eggs for my husband during some time we were apart, and he liked them a lot - said it was just a bit more interesting. I also bought him a Fleshlight, which he hated, but I did read a LOT of very enthusiastic reviews of the Fleshlight, so maybe you'd like that. They're expensive to try out, though.

Best answer: This comment is way TMI and has explicit details in it. If you're easily squicked, look away now.
Anal play:
If you want to go down this route, I'd suggest exploring with your fingers first. Do this after a BM, in the shower. Use a little water a lube, and relax. Insert a finger and make a "come hither" motion towards the front of your body. You, unless you're extremely lucky, won't experience amazing sensations right away. Keep poking around though, and you'll eventually find a spot that feels nicer than the rest. That's your prostate. You might find it helpful to masturbate to not-quite-completion first, to get everything in the area "woken up". Not every guy enjoys anal play, even if they want to.
The Aneros can take a little work to get used to. There are several different designs which all work in the same way but that stimulate slightly different points internally. If your prostate is in a different location to where the tip of the Aneros is poking, it's not going to work. They're not that cheap either. However, they can be extremely effective if you can find one that works for you. They can be used with pretty much any type of lube, are easy to wash and rely on your body's physiology to work - you insert it and then leave it alone to do its job. Handy if you're playing alone and aren't able to dislocate your shoulders or find a comfortable position to get into. There are various types of vibrating devices that stimulate the prostate too, such as the Rudeboy mentioned upthread. For a beginner, I'd suggest choosing something that you don't have to manipulate yourself. Vibrating toys can vary greatly in their output - you might find something that makes a lot of noise but that doesn't actually do much.
Other anal toys include things like anal beads (fancier kind), vibrating butt plugs (also available in non-vibe varieties) or even things like this. These are generally cheaper than things like the Aneros, but they generally stimulate your sphincter as their main function. Equally fun, just a different sensation. Anal beads are designed to be inserted and later extracted, often at the point of orgasm. Be warned that they can get messy quickly. Butt plugs are ideal for a beginner, I think, because they don't have to be interacted with and can be left in for some time, letting an individual get used to the sensations they create.
Perineum:
Your perineum is the bit between your anus and your scrotum, sometimes called the gooch or the taint. Again, some guys like it stimulated, some don't and getting yourself worked up before trying might help. Rubbing along the plane of the perineum works, or you could try using a bullet on it or even press against it with your fingers. Several types of prostate toys also stimulate this area. There's even a specific toy that does the job, though you should just be able to use any kind of vibrator.
Penis:
The main type of toy you're looking at for the penis is some kind of sleeve. They come in lots of different types. There's the Fleshlight, the stroker type, the Tenga Flip and other Tenga toys, etc.
Other kinds vibrate, some beat you off and you can even get "realistic" vagina affairs. There's also the Cyclone and The Monkey Spanker and the VerSpanken. I can't find a link to it now, but I once saw a device that fitted over your hand like a glove and that had a vibrating part against the palm that you masturbated with.
All of these should be washable in warm water. Personally, I'd recommend getting yourself a cheap stroker, a Tenga egg, a bullet vibe and some water based lube. That should set you back less than $50 and give you several new options. For example, put the bullet in the other end of the stroker. Or rub it over your perineum or sphincter. Wrap the egg over your scrotum. Etc.
Other tips:
1] Get yourself an ice cube and rub it over your glans/nipples (try the refreezable ice cubes for less mess).
2] Get some cooling or warming lube for a different sensation.
3] Change the position you masturbate in. Put your head off the edge of the bed, or your feet in the air. Change hands.
4] DO NOT insert a bullet into your anus unless it's explicitly designed for that purpose. Rubbing it over your sphincter is fine, but it's easy to get carried away and find yourself looking for some kitchen tongs. Vibrating butt plugs are cheap and MUCH safer if you want to go that route.
5] Consider nipple clamps. Some guys enjoy having their nipples pinched.
6] Consider adding different sensations to your play - a feather, silk, one of those head massager things. I know someone who likes the feel of a heavy chain draped over them.
7] This looks like it might be kind of fun too.
8] If you do get a vibrator, test it to ensure that other people in the house can't hear it while you're using it.
9] Get yourself a bottle of isopropyl. It will help keep the insides f your toys fresh and clean. Always dry the insides of strokers, etc, properly.

I've really, really enjoyed my super sucker. Given that your head comes out the other end, you'll never get semen inside of it, so cleaning it isn't all that imperative to begin with and all it takes is a quick wash in the sink.

Response by poster: Hi everyone, checking back in.
I guess I'll respond in roughly reverse order:
Speaking of toys, any good water based lube recommendations? I bought some Wet brand water based lube to replace their silicone lube a while ago, but I hate it. It goes dry, and once it does, it feels sticky and itchy. Amazon users seem to like Gun Oil brand water based lube, so I might try that.

I guess I'll respond in roughly reverse order:
- Hitatchi Magic Wand
- Not sure what to think about that. That always struck me as more of a woman's toy, but I guess it could be neat. Of course, the size and noise are an issue. But it's not like I'm never the only person at home.
- Tenga Eggs
- They seem like a neat concept, but the mixed reviews on Amazon have scared me away. But I imagine that might be a matter of counterfeits sold by third party vendors, since they are really cheap on DealExtreme, the funnest sketchy merchandise store I know of.
- Anal Play
- I might try it some more. I feel like it's likely I just haven't found the spot and how to stroke it. The Aneros copy is extremely hot, but I probably will just try to make sure that I am wired right for it first.
- Fleshlight
- Interesting to hear that some people don't like it, considering the reviews are so high on Amazon, and it's just expensive enough that if I don't like it, it'd be a problem. It's expensive enough I'd be upset if it didn't work out. Reading more about them, it sounds like they're easier to clean than I thought, but long enough they are hard to clean in a sink. Some people report good results cleaning it in the tub, but that's noisy.
- Creepy Teleprescence USB toy
- Honestly, I dig the concept a lot more than the product as shown. The thing looks creepy, and the business model of hiring webcam models to pleasure you over a device they stimulate (as featured on their website) kind of creeps me out and seems wholly inappropriate for me, too. I am in a long term relationship (I just live about an hour away from my girlfriend and am busy with work and school, so I can't have sex as often as I'd like). Plus, $200 is more than I'd like to spend.
I'd otherwise be all over it. While I doubt they'd have porn that caters to me (check my MeFi comment history, I guess, if you're curious), I like the idea of a user-programmable device, and they do have a dev kit.
- Vibrating Bullet
- Probably what I'm most likely to get, all things considered. Sounds like it offers the a good amount of reward and variety with the least fiscal risk.

Sliquid brand. They're water based (mostly) so you can use them with anything and don't contain glycerin with can possibly contribute to yeast infections. Also vegan. Relatively easy to clean up too, with a damp cloth. ID Glide is also good.

A little bit about male masturbators, aka masturbation sleeves (those names sound horribly clinical, but the other default term--"pocket pussy"--is silly and often not even accurate, as they won't fit in your pocket and include non-vagina options). IMO, Fleshlights are very overpriced and much larger (longer, really) than what the vast majority of men will ever need. I suspect that their popularity is two parts marketing to one part having an incredible variety, including the usual modeled-on-a-real-porn-star type and some kind of bizarre options, including one blue "Alien" model that had two clitorises and came with a coupon for the Avatar XXX parody.
If you're not experienced with these, I'd try one of the cheaper options. The Climax Gem Hand Job Stroker comes in three different varieties--green, blue, and clear--and are inexpensive enough that you could get all three, plus some lube, for less than what a single Fleshlight would cost you. (The other thing that needs to be said about Fleshlight is that its alleged raison d'etre--discreet packaging--is a joke; it's way bigger than any flashlight that almost any non-cop uses today.)

For prostate play, a g-spot vibrator might prove enjoyable. The angle makes it easier to stimulate the right spot.
I went googling for the egg so I could link it, and found this kit that also has the g-spot vibe I like best, plus a couple of other goodies to experiment with.
As for discreet toy cleaning, I keep a pop-up container of Wet Ones beside the bed, so no need to interrupt the nice drowsy afterglow to go wash your toys.
