Looking for alternatives to Yahoo chatrooms

Yes, they were infested with bots and spam and all, but I actually miss Yahoo chatrooms. What alternatives are there?

I miss being able to go online and chat with total strangers. I miss the ability to log into rooms that were defined by a particular content, whether it was Environment, Politics, NSFW, or whatever.

Are there alternatives to Yahoo chatrooms? Or are all chatrooms these days only narrowly focused on particular content areas?

There's Metafilter Chat.

There's always IRC. Which network depends on what you want to talk about. Freenode's channels (= chatrooms) tend to be about open-source projects. Quakenet's focus is obviously Quake primarily and general gaming secondarily. EFnet's probably the most "generalist" network. There are more networks, big and small, and thousands of channels running the gamut.
