Vertical stripes in PSP-2000 display. Prognosis?

The screen of my PSP-2000 has faint vertical stripes running through it; the effect is more translucent than opaque (image 1, image 2). What, if anything, can I do to fix this?

I bought the PSP second-hand a couple of years ago, and it only had a couple of these stripes running up the left side; they were right up against the margin and didn't ever really seem to affect the display at all. Over the past six months or so, the stripes have been multiplying, and I've noticed a little graphical distortion in and around the oldest ones (image 1 has an example of this).

Are these stripes going to continue to appear until the screen is a glitch-fest, or does is this degenerative process a thing known to manifest and then eventually end? Can this PSP be saved for less than the cost of buying a new one? I'm not averse to the idea of attempting to replace the screen myself, if that's the only failing component, but I've had no luck in finding clear and precise advice and direction along those lines. Difficulty: I am excellent at following directions but have extremely shaky hands.

The screen is failing. You should be able to find a PSP-3000 (with brighter, sharper) screen for ~$120 new or used for $70 or so. You can find used 2000 or 1000 units even cheaper than that, just make sure you power them on and check out what condition the screen is still in.
