Alternatives to Google Docs

I need an alternative to Google Drive (formerly Google Docs) to use with my 5th grade students.

I've been trying to find an online service that will allow users to create, store, and edit documents.

A few years ago I started having my students use Google Docs for school assignments. The main goal was to enable them to work on the same document in school and at home without the need for flash drives. A secondary goal was to allow me to check their work online.

Google Docs/Drive no longer functions on computers (there are hundreds of such issues described on google forums and our IT department has looked into and can't find a solution) and I'd like to find another solution. I would love to use Live Office, but there is no way for our IT department to allow access to this without also allowing access to hotmail, and they will not do that.

Anybody know of other solutions that will do what I need and not require resources beyond what my district has? (we have very old and slow PCs and are not able to install any software, and have pretty restrictive filtering on the internet)

Just documents as in text, or do you need spreadsheets too?

If just text, would Evernote be sufficient? It's a note-taking and sharing app, but it has lightweight word processing features.

I maybe missing something, but could you create a Dropbox folder for your class, then have each student have their own sub-folder within that is shared between you and them?

I was going to recommend Zoho as well. It functions really well.

Dropbox was my thought as well.

Do the students need to be able to collaborate in real time? If not, I suggest PBWorks- A lot of our teachers, including middle school, use it to post assignments and collect them. There's free and paid versions- you should be fine with the free version.

primarypad is a web-based word processor designed for schools that allows pupils and teachers to work together in real-time.
