How to configure wireless switches?
August 2, 2005 10:10 PM   Subscribe

I want to learn IOS and any other Cisco switch configuring protocol stuff. Is there a good resource for this? I kind of need it to get out of a bad situation so learning quick would be much appreciated. I want to learn the fundamentals so that I can a) impress them b) begin the learning curve which is the hardest thing to do in my opinion. BTW this is switch configuring for a wireless network.

I have tech questions on Metafilter but I hope this one is at least esoteric enough.

Best answer: I assume that you don't have the time/money to do a CCNA, but you could buy one of the books.
Look for CCNA study guides, they're pretty much what you're looking for.

Best answer: Here you go - whitepaper tutorials from IntelligentEdu, and the Merry Pranksters at RouterGod. It you feel brave enough, you can also wade through the (very) detailled pages at Bitpipe.

Response by poster: Thanks guys,

man, there are so many people posting here these days I'm almost in the archives already. Should have posted on a less off-hour.

Matt Basham, the guy who runs the Cisco Academy I go to, has written a CCNA lab manual. It's called Learning by Doing, and it's available free for download as a PDF from lulu.com. It's pretty good...Cisco tried to buy it from him so it wouldn't be available for free. However, CCNA stuff, while very helpful for starting your learning curve and getting a handle on IOS, won't teach you jack about wireless networking. Matt covers switching in that book, though, so if you're not sure yet what STP is or how to set up a VLAN, start there.

As more of a cookbook of what IOS commands you need to enter to do anything in particular, I've found this page of Cisco IOS configuration notes to be helpful in the past.

When in doubt, though, Google Cisco's site. There's a lot of documentation there, albeit dryly written.

If you're less scrupulous, there's always an archive of every official Cisco textbook, CCNA through CCIE, floating around BitTorrent trackers. I think it weighs in at a little less than 2 gigs.
