Printer Woes

TechSupportFilter: I can't make my Windows ME PC see the new HP LaserJet 2300n printer that was donated to our nonprofit. Help!

All the other machines in the office run off of XP, and they installed fine, but (despite downloading two different drivers from HP) the computer doesn't seem to see the printer. Suggestions? Step by step processes? I'd like to try to avoid calling our oh-so-expensive tech support consultant if I can avoid it.

1. Install upgrade to Windows XP. There has to be a cheap version floating around on eBay.

2. Why haven't you installed XP yet?

I don't mean to sound unhelpful, but Windows ME is just not worth the heartache it causes.

If you're not going to get XP, make sure to install the correct ME compatible driver first. Turn off the computer and printer. Unplug them from eachother. Plug them back together. Turn on printer. Wait a moment. Turn on computer. (this has solved about half of my own printer problems, the other half were solved by getting rid of ME). Good luck, I feel your pain.

Have you verified that it's not a networking problem? (win ME machine can reach the HP's web interface)

If you're going to get a tech consultant involved, you might want to look at going XP unless there's some blocking factor. Windows ME is absolutely notorious for these types of problems... (plus it's easier to maintain a more homogenous network)

Same thing recently happened to me with my ME and the new printer I bought. Absolutely no solution that I could find after days of frustration. I've now ordered a new pc with XP.

Oh, it's networked? Ooh. Another reason to get XP.

Response by poster: Tweak, if you would like to donate the funds to pay for a license for XP for this machine, great. Email me and I'll tell you where to send the check. Your donation will even be 100% tax deductable. Otherwise, that's not a helpful answer.

We're a tiny nonprofit working on completely donated equipment. Because of the nature of our work, its important that we have real, up-to-date software licenses ... not just "cheap versions floating around on eBay".

Thanks to the person who emailed me the correct answer:
Downloading hp LaserJet 2300 printing system software (its on the driver page but its more than just the driver) and getting the IP address of the printer from another machine in the office that it could connect to, solved the problem.

I'm sorry, I was not trying to be snarky, just suggesting what I thought would be the best long-term option.
