Long-lost rapper

Does anyone know who this fellow is, and how he might be contacted?

All I know is his real name is reputed to be David Cary Sr. and the song is from 1986. A friend of mine remixed his song and would like permission to use this picture.

I figured if Metafilter can't solve this, no one can.

Are you asking about the original Devastatin’ Dave The Turntable Slave? Or are you asking about the guy you linked to, because they seem to be different people.

The opening shot in this video is of a record label(the sticker), which features the name of the producer and the name, address, and phone number of the record label (the company). That's probably a good start? Especially since its probably the record label, not the artist, who has the rights.

It could be a fake record, but it looks too detailed and boring to be fake. (Even if that company is gone, you can probably find out who bought their inventory.)

Response by poster: You're right, Sphinx. I didn't realize! I think we're looking for him.

Or, actually, the description for the video links to this page, which links to the complete contact information for the current record label.

FYI, i found this by googling "devastatin dave the turntable slave", so sometimes its best to not complicate things.

Sadly tho, "contact information now obsolete." but it could be worth trying. The area code would be 323 now, I think.

His kids Mistah Cary and Rella B. Cary both have pretty extensive social media presences (found their names in the acknowledgments of this later release), so you might try to contact them--Mistah posted some new cuts to his ReverbNation page quite recently.

New cuts of his, not his dad's, I mean. It looks like several of his kids are trying to make a go of it as performers.

The end of those acknowledgments that Sidhedevil linked to says "P.S.- We are in desparate need of a good manager and a distribution deal. Anyone who can hook that up should contact Devastatin Dave by e-mail. If you're serious we'll talk biz by phone and/or in person. davestate@netzero.net(leave your contact #)."

Perhaps that email would work?

That email was from 2004 and netzero is pretty moribund from what I hear, but it can't hurt to try it.
