iTunes Missing Songs, Apple Fix Didn't Work

My iTunes is suddenly missing thousands of songs and all my playlists despite the music files still being there--have tried Apple's fix.

Hi all--

I have iTunes 10.6.3. (I did have a prior version, but upgraded in the hopes it would fix the issue I'm posting about.)

I got some error messages about my library yesterday. I don't remember exactly what they said, but when I next opened iTunes, my playlists and a lot of my songs were gone.

I tried this but it didn't fix the problem. It did replace the playlist menu, but none of my actual playlists are stored there.

The music files are all still there.

I do have all my music backed up via BackBlaze if all else fails.

I have a MacBook Pro and I'm running 10.6.8.

Also, would it work if I deleted the iTunes app and the .xml and then redownloaded iTunes so it would have to rebuild my library based on the actual files? I don't mind so much if I lose my own playlists; I mostly just care about the songs.

Response by poster: I found a hack that at least got my songs back, though it looks like my playlists are gone for good.

If I were you, I'd just delete the XML and import the music into iTunes again from its current location and let it rebuild its library. It should be smart enough to know that it's importing from an iTunes created library, but just in case, you'll want to go to Preferences > Advanced> and Uncheck "Copy Files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" for the time being.

(Make sure you check it back when you're done with the import, which hopefully won't take too long.)

Response by poster: Yep, that's exactly what i did. I was missing over 18,000 songs!

I still don't have the "standard" playlists (Recently Added, Recently Played, etc.), but I'll figure that out somehow.
