Yet another "help me identify this half-remembered thing from my childhood" post. Please help me identify this vaguely-remembered anime about a robot child?
I only remember the end, where there's some explosion or something, and some adult character is cradling the robot child's dismembered torso and weeping. It freaked the crap out of me as a little kid! This would be in the 80s or early 90s.

Astro Boy? It reminds me of the storyline that was rewritten by Urusawa as Pluto.

Battle Angel, based on the "Battle Angel Alita" manga, to be specific. The anime is two episodes long, the comics go on for more or less ever.
