Please help with possessed AC unit!

I have a Haier window AC unit. It is possessed. Looking for some technical help.
My window unit's control panel has gone crazy. None of the input buttons do what they are labeled as. The unit has had this problem for several summers, but this year it has gotten worse.
The buttons seem linked to random functions (sometimes 'mode' changes speed, 'timer' changes the mode, etc). I have typically been able to fool around with it enough until I get what I want. Unfortunately, the one thing it won't do this year is turn the temperature down. No button will turn the temp down, and since some buttons turn the temperature up the unit is set to only start cooling at 86 degrees. This is obviously a problem.
I don't want to trash the unit, since it cools when the settings are correct. Any suggestions?

Response by poster: The buttons do push in and out. The protective plastic does not look like it was meant to be removed, though I could do it if I wanted to.

First guess is the control panel is fried. It happens. The replacement part could be from $50-$125 depending on the Haier model, but it is pretty easy to replace. No more work than installing a PC internal hard drive. A couple screws, a couple plug-in connectors, done. Search "Haier air conditioner control panel" to find a couple which don't look like they fit your exact model, but those companies should have the one you need by your exact model number.

Best answer: Try holding the power button down while plugging and unplugging it from the wall. I've had some luck with bad control panels where doing that kicked it back into a factory reset.

It also looks like the protective plastic film is still on there (the bubbling around the power button). Does that peel off?
