Dean & Deluca - Parmigiano Reggiano.

Oops ... there seems to be some problem with the hyperlink ... it resolves to Lobster Rolls. Check out the website for:
Parmigiano Reggiano (Italy)
Unpasteurized cow's milk. Our robust, fine-grained wedge is cut to order just for us by a 100-year-old Reggiano producer. Includes a parmigiano knife.

$42.00 / #601127 / 2.00 LB
Enjoy!

How about this shop on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx? I think I may have actually been in this store. The per pound cost is less. And order some dried mozzarella while you're there. Whenever I am in NYC I try to bring back some.

If Dean & DeLuca is really having it cut by the producer in Italy I can guarantee this will taste fresher.

DiBruno Bros. House of Cheese. I'm a little biased because their original store is down the street from me, but these guys rock.

Yeah I think you'd definitely want to buy it from someone who imported the whole wheel then cut and package it locally. I can't imagine that Dean and Deluca don't do that as well, so their marketing text might just be really misleading - it seems quaint and stuff, but what they're describing is a much worse practise than they should be doing.

If you're in Canada not the US you might want to consider Milano in Montreal. They say (and legend has it) that they are the biggest sellers (I guess they mean retailers) of Reggiano in the world, and I can vouch for the quality of their cheese.

Is there any advantage to buying it by mail? Any pros seem like they would be outweighed by the con of buying in the pound size range (which is about a 6-9 month supply for me).

Smackfu, it depends on where you live. There is a wide variation in the quality of parmigiano reggiano. My brother can point you to a book that includes the author's quest to decode the markings on the rind of the wheels, in search of cheese made from milk from cows in the right pastures, at the right time of year to maximize deliciousness.

My experience is that if you buy from stores servicing an ethnic Italian clientele you get better cheese. Maybe it's turnover, maybe it's a better relationship with the suppliers, maybe it's being held to a higher standard from those customers who grew up on the good stuff.
