Coos Bay, Oregon. AskMeFi has previously discussed driving through but what to do when you have a weekend (mostly to yourself) in Coos Bay?

My wife will be at a conference 5/19-5/20 during the day so I'll be left to my own devices in Coos Bay. I'm willing to travel an hour or so in any direction. Thinking about spending one day checking out any bookstores, record stores, thrift stores, etc., and one day communing with nature (but not on the sand dunes). Restaurant recommendations are most welcome too. Will relax distance requirement for your favorite restaurant or beer store or tidepool or ....

Bullard's Beach and Bandon State Park are pretty and only 30 minutes or so away. One of my favorite short hikes to a secluded beach is at the end of an otherwise unremarkable road near Cape Blanco (memail me for details)

Bandon proper is touristy but charming too. There's a cafe / bakery with good wifi in town and the area is worth a walk-around. There are a couple of decent thrift stores nearby too.

Things get prettier and more real south of Bandon. Almost every store is visible from the main road.

Drive south of Coos Bay and Bandon and exploring is a pleasant activity.

Depending on how you are traveling to get to and from coos bay, I really enjoy dinner at the Waterfront restaurant in Florence. Great atmosphere, inexpensive food, good dinner crowd. If it's crowded, which it usually is, I like eating dinner at the bar ... All sorts of fascinating people there.

Shore Acres State Park ... there is a nominal fee ... but it's May and it's gardens on cliff above the beach ... Head out to Charleston, where you will find docks, food, gift stores, then on west past Sunset Bay Beach (great place to walk around tidepools if the tide is out); then to Shore Acres. Shortly beyond that is a Viewpoint where you can watch Sea Lions, then Cape Arago Park. All but Shore Acres are free. You can get from downtown Coos Bay to the Beaches past Charleston in 15 minutes or less.
