Website visitor survey

I am in the process of creating a survey form for a website and wanted to know what would be the most effective method of gathering responses online?

I'd like to have an exit popup, however most browsers nowadays block those. Is there another solution? Or some code I'm overlooking, that only porn sites are privy to for their exit popups? I only tested an exit popup with a session cookie found here, and my updated browsers blocked it.

One thing I do not want is a button on the homepage "Click here to do our survey" type of thing. Any and all other suggestions/javascript/etc. are welcome. The session cookie is a must too, so repeat visitors don't get bombarded by the survey. Thanks!

Not enough information.

How many responses do you anticipate?
Why do you want an exit popup? (So we can suggest more polite alternatives.)
If you don't offer a "Take This Survey" link, how do you propose to let people know that they can take your survey? What is wrong with a link to the survey?
Are you trying to do something obnoxious? Is that why the coyness?

If you can run PHP / MySQL, phpSurveyor is a great choice. Can't recommend it enough. Don't reinvent the wheel unless you're getting paid for it. Even if you can't run it, I'd check it out for ideas, just the same.

Response by poster: I want an exit survey because I want people who have gone through the site to then be given the survey and guage their impressions of the site. This isn't anything malicious. Visitors leave from various pages of the site, so the homepage link wouldn't do them much good, and real estate on the homepage is lacking to begin with.

Can't run PHP unfortunately, I'm even using a service to remotely collect responses (currently being used for a warranty registration form).

Thanks for your responses.
