where's the closest place i can go to get my visa renewed?
i entered europe through zurich which is not part of the EU but still in europe.
the eu countries don't do anything for my passport.
where's the closest place i can go so that i can return and renew my visa. Alternatively what is the easiest?
also i am a us citizen if that is important.

I'm assuming you want to re-start the clock on your Schengen entry. You could just find a budget flight to the nearest non-Schengen country that allows visa-free travel for Americans. Turkey, perhaps? Morocco? Maybe Croatia? The UK?
I cannot travel in European countries without visas, so I have no idea if this sort of renewal is permitted.

Belgrade, Serbia is:
1) Outside the Schengen Area
2) Does not require a visa
3) Has heaps of flights to a great variety of European cities

Switzerland is still Schengen, even if it's not EU. You're only allowed to be in any Schengen area 90 out of every 180 days (starting on Schengen entry) on a standard tourist visa, so you can't just exit and re-enter a few days later. Without having a working or student visa, or having a good deal of savings to show that you won't work, it's difficult to legally stay longer than that just to be a tourist or hang out. People may be able to help if you provide a lot more details of where you are, how long you've been in Europe, and what exactly you want to do, but the basic situation you described isn't legally possible without a three month stay outside the Schengen zone.

Schismatic brings up a good point. 90 days out of 180 days is the limit. If you are at 45 days, you can leave for 15 days and come back for 45 days, for example, but it doesn't automatically reset when you leave.

As mentioned above its not a simple "restarting the clock" as Switzerland is part of the Shengen Zone. The rules are specifically to avoid that sort of thing. If you have used up your 90 days then you have to leave the Shengen Zone for the next 90 days. Croatia, Turkey, USSR... UK (?)
Can you go home?
Can you apply for any other visa?
- You may be able to extend your stay simply by 'applying' for a work visa, as they may give you a temporary visa for a few months - while the authorities decide your case.
