Looking for readings on middle childhood

I'm looking for good readings on Middle Childhood, inspired by this New York Times article and my 5.5 year old son.

My son is five and a half. He's still a little kid but he won't be one much longer. I'd like to read up on the terrain he'll be covering over the next five to seven years. What can I expect, what can I look for, and what can I do to help him along?

This article is interesting, as is this series, as far as brain development goes. I work in an elementary school, and they've both helped me to understand certain behaviours, especially in boys - and to remember it's because their brains "aren't done".

Have you read Nurtureshock by Po Bronson? Lots of interesting info gleaned from studies about child development, particularly school stuff.

Response by poster: Thank you for these references. I'm still open for more if anyone else is still reading this!
