Tell me about the Illuminati

Is there a serious, modern, non-fiction, non-kook, non-speculative history of the Bavarian Illuminati, as founded for Adam Weishaupt? I mean the German rationalist club, not the conspiracy theories surrounding it.

Mention Robert Anton Wilson, the Principia Discordia, David Icke, Dan Brown, or GURPS and i will sent Jesuit assassins to your door.

J.M. Roberts published a serious, modern, non-kooky book in 1972 called The Mythology of the Secret Societies, which was reprinted in 2008.
