WWVD, or What Will Vaniqa Do?

Have you used Vaniqa? What kind of results have you gotten?

I'm female, late thirties and have coarse chin hair and hyperpigmented areas where the hair grows. I plucked for years, but I think the plucking and resulting ingrown hairs are the reason for the hyperpigmentation.

I've since started shaving, but find that I have to shave everyday to keep the stubble at bay. I have to shave twice if I'm going out at night.

Depilatories do not work and electrolysis caused more hyperpigmentation. (Electrolysis is still on the table, but not for a while yet. I kind of think that the dark spots would fade after I finished treatment.)

The Vaniqa website says it "reduce[s] the growth of unwanted facial hair in women," indicating that I wouldn't have to shave so frequently, but I wonder how that pans out in real life. Would I still get stubble, but just not everyday? How long might I go before being afraid of letting someone touch my face? Would the hair be thinner or less coarse?

Any real-life anecdotes would be helpful. Throwaway email at 54529amf@gmail.com

I have a Vaniqua prescription but never had it filled because the tubes are almost $100 each. I don't know if that will factor into your decision making at all.

Have you tried waxing? A friend waxes her (invisible to me and to everyone else, I think) mustache, and she's never mentioned hyperpigmentation.

What does your dermatologist say?

My endocrinologist, who treats a lot of ladies with extra hair due to endocrine disorders, highly recommended Vaniqa to me when I was first diagnosed with my condition. Like crankylex, I ended up not filling the prescription because it was super expensive, but my doc did stress how happy her other patients had been with it.

May I recommend laser hair removal? A friend of mine swears by it, especially for coarser, darker hairs (if you have those).

Dr. Oz recommended it. So far, I find him pretty reliable, for a teevee doc.

I had the RX I got from my dermatologist filled a few years ago and was somewhat happy with the results. It definately does what it says on the tube. The hair on my chin and neck slowly went away and I was about 3/4 of the way through that 100 dollar tube by the time it all went away. To be fair, you don't really need to use much of it. I did find, however, that it made the skin on my neck and chin sort of sensitive and plasticy.

I didn't continue with it because, uh, it's a 100 dollars a tube.

Have you thought about having the hair threaded? Though my skin is sensitive, I have the majority of my face done (eyebrows, sideburns, upper lip, chin and neck) and after the initial redness/irritation, my skin is just fine.
