Best people watching scene on Halloween in San Francisco?

Here's my ideal Halloween: find a nice bar with a view, have a few drinks, watch the crazy party goers for a few hours then head home. Where should I go to do this in San Francisco and at what time at night?

Years ago: Market and Castro, anytime...and hilarious walking down the aisle of any Muni bus past the costumed party-goers.

Not Castro anymore; back in 2006 there was some violence and they've more or less closed that down. (I have not personally tried to go since that happened, but certainly there was a big push to move away from the Castro event).

Wikipedia talks about it; and here's a listing of events happening elsewhere in the area.

Last Halloween I went to a show at Slim's and DNA lounge was right around the corner. The line was HUGE and there was lots of great people watching on the street in that area.

I quite enjoyed the vibe in the Haight-Ashbury when I went a few years ago on Halloween. There were enough people out that it felt lively, and live bands in all the bars, but it wasn't insanely crowded.

The Castro became a really bad scene. I last went in 2005, and it was wall-to-wall people, and literally thousands of asshole dudes who just showed up to ogle and grope the ladies. (Otherwise known to my friends as The Halloween Where Nibbly Fang Totally Punched That Frat Boy.) I was relieved when the city shut it down.

I would try to head home by 10 or 11, especially if you're staying in the East Bay. Transit across the bay is awful after 11 or so, and the buses and such get pretty crowded.
