Which should I buy for 360, Rage or Gears of War 3.

Trying to reduce the number of games I buy so I gotta make this count.

Best answer: You could rent, or use Gamefly?

Also, are you in it more for single or multiplayer?

Either way, if you must buy, I'd probably go for Gears.

Best answer: Gears of War 3 for sure. Rage is pretty much an all-round disappointment unless you really, really, loved Borderlands and want more of that with even less plot and characterization.

Best answer: I've finished Gears 3, and just started on Rage. My immediate reaction is "wow, this game is pretty okay!" Gears had its problems, but they were problems with a basically-great game, one that I keep coming back to for multiplayer, co-op and deathmatch alike. Rage is... fine. I'm having a pretty good time. And it looks great. But it's really not a challenge which I'd pick.

Best answer: Gears. You know you already like Gears and it's more of the same, but better. Rage has been pretty much universally panned. Plus Gears is like $70 at JB.

which JB? Is it cheaper at EB?
posted by Lovecraft In Brooklyn at 8:28 PM on October 4, 2011

Best answer: Any JB (my apologies, though, it must have only been $69 during release week, it's the same price as Rage now, $79). JB Hi Fi is always cheaper than EB. Even if EB has a big special, it's still going to be cheaper at JB. JB also give you better trade-in value for old games.

I haven't found that, but that would be a derail.

Best answer: Must be a different story in Sydney then. My experience in both Brisbane and Melbourne is the EB is always the most expensive option. But yeah, get it cheapest wherever you can, and in any event EB will generally price-match if you can show them a catalogue or website or whatever.

Response by poster: Didn't really like Borderlands, so I guess I can pass on Rage.

What about Spacemarine, I was looking forward to it but my interest kinda waned. GOW or Spacemarine? Any other recommendations? I am already committed to Arkham City on the 18th

Best answer: Space Marine is Pretty Good. But it's not great, and you'll probably prefer Gears. Regardless, there's a demo for Space Marine - at least there is here in the US - which should help make the decision there.

Best answer: I've heard good things about Space Marine.

Dark Souls is meant to be ultra-hard, but really satisfying.

Skyrim? Not my thing but yeah.

I'd get Gears, just because I marathoned the first two and loved them.

Best answer: Oh wow sorry Ad hominem, because I'm stupid and don't pay attention to things and am stupid I mistakenly thought that Lovecraft In Brooklyn posted this Ask, so I was addressing the specifics of my answers to him. But the generality remains the same: GoW3 is the superior game.

I haven't heard too many amazing things about Space Marine but I've likewise heard nothing bad. Honestly, whenever spoilt for choice, I'm not trying to shill for Epic or anything but you would be hard-pressed to go wrong with a Gears game (that you haven't played).

the Space Marine demo is a covermount DVD on the new Official Australian XBox Magazine

Response by poster: Np problem, took me a couple minutes to figure out you guys were talking australian currency. Plus EB and JB threw me off, EB was electronics boutique here which closed many years ago and JB was JB toys, which also closed. I thought you guys might be answering from 1989 or something.

Seems like Gears has it, but if they have a used copy (they will) I'll pick up Space Marine.

Best answer: fwiw, I'm pretty sure Space Marine is available on Steam, and would likely be cheaper than a boxed 360 copy, if your PC can handle it (and I doubt it would be too demanding).

Response by poster: I only have a laptop, a non-gaming laptop at that. The money isn't really the issue, the issue is that I buy games, and unless they are very very good I play them once, and never play them again. I would sign up for gamefly but I'll just wait for netflix to carry games.

Dark souls looks interesting, but it is the successor to Demon Souls is it not? Too hard for me.

Best answer: Eurogamer and The Guardian like RAGE, which should count for more than Gamepro and such
posted by Lovecraft In Brooklyn at 9:44 PM on October 4, 2011

Best answer: Sounds like Gears would be your best value, at least from the reviews I've read. The Joystiq review for Rage made it sound pretty lackluster, and while I've heard great things about Space Marine, you'll probably find more polish in Gears.

You don't mention if you've played the first 2 Gears. I hadn't, so after hearing great things about 3, I picked up the Gears 1 + 2 combo pack for 30 bucks. Not for the story continuity, but mostly cause it was a cheaper way to find out if I enjoyed the games. So far, so good!

Best answer: Also, if you feel up for a shooter that is sort of in a lawless desert setting plus vehicles, play Far Cry 2 (if you haven't already). Man I love that game.

Best answer: If you want things to explode, and like Bionic Commando but hate Mike Patton, you should get Just Cause 2.

Hell get Just Cause 2 anyway.

Best answer: Everything I have read about Dark Souls states that they refined the Demon's Souls gameplay. So it's just as difficult, but may be a little less annoyingly so.

Response by poster: So what I am hearing is I should buy Far Cry 2, Just Cause 2, Dark Souls, Space Marine, GOW3 but skip Rage? How about Dead Island?

I will go to the store and make a snap decision based on the first game I see.

Response by poster: Also. Bast answer for you! Best answer for you! Everyone gets a best answer!

Best answer: Dead Island not so much, IMO. It aspires to so much it doesn't achieve.

Best answer: Ha ha, you came here looking to "reduce the number of games you buy", and now you have a shopping list.

At the risk of confusing things, on the Gamers With Jobs podcast, they were fairly glowing about Rage, sooo... you may want to check out some reviewers you know you usually get along with. (To be fair, they said they were "only 7 hours in", and seemed oblivious that -- at least according to the Joystiq review -- it's an 8-hour game. I wonder how much of a difference that would make.)
posted by TangoCharlie at 12:44 PM on October 5, 2011

Response by poster: Yeah, After all this I am still on the fence. Dark Souls has entered the race as a dark horse contender.

I know I will like GOW3, it is one of my favorite game series, but I might not want to play another cover shooter right now. Rage seems like even if it has flaws it may have a nugget of brilliance that demands I play it, but the comparison to borderlands gives me pause.

Best answer: If you're on Steam, Just Cause 2 is usually like 5 bucks.

BTW, my local game store has started advertising Batman: Arkham City preorders....

One more reason to get Dark Souls instead.
You can probably pick up Gears later for half the price.

Disclaimer: I actually have not played Dark Souls yet, I don't even know if I'll like it myself, so don't blame me if you end up hating it (:

Best answer: Space Marine is pretty cool, but they did something that has pissed me off. The main mechanic for healing is to stun an enemy and perform an "execution" move. Now I am stuck in a part with no cover and it is all shooty against pointy boyz. I hate when a company decides to "mix things up" a bit when you are used to a mechanic.

Let me clarify that. Add "in melee" after "stun an enemy" and "with almost no cover and a lot of enemy grenades" after "all shooty".

Cheers!

Finished Rage last night. Quite fun. Very derivative of several other games, but does it well. Described to a friend as Doom 3 got it on with Borderlands, then fostered the kid with Oblivion for crafting and questing. Not at all what I expected though.
