Where can I find more music that has bass like this

My 11-year-old has shown interest in techno and I'm trying to encourage him but I'm more of a rock & punk guy so I don't know the landscape.

He asked me about the bassline in The Black Eyed Peas (I know) cover of The Time of My Life.

It sounds like a TB-303-alike, with portamento turned on (does the original TB have that option?) and some effect added-- perhaps a ring modulator?

In which of the many sub-genres (IDM, glitch, acid house) would this be idiomatic? I have a Rhapsody account and I keep pointing him at it telling him to walk up & down the Electronica/Dance tree, but I guess it's going to take more guidance than that.

Best answer: Go to beatport.com and take him to the electrohouse subgenre. This should be a good start.

Best answer: 303 doesn't have portamento, it's probably an SH-101 (or simulated, or later) on sawtooth, judging from the timbre. I'll try to think of some particular tracks.

I can't listen to the sample file right now (mp3 would be better), but the 303 does have a slide or glide option similar to portamento.

Response by poster: mp3 version

Agreed, that sounds strongly like a classic SH-101 line. As this Wikipedia page shows, the 101 was used by a wide range of artists. Perhaps digging through that list will help find similar sounding works?

303 slide has a faster transition and always hits the actual note, vs. the 101's (and others') portamento that can change direction before reaching the note.

I'll bet he'd like Mouse on Mars. Example, example, example.

Not the bass, but the music in general reminds me of the music in this video that starts at about 1:04.

The stuff I can think of along similar lines would be between house and techno with a bit of retro-rave flavor thrown in, like Mr. Oizo (ex., ex.) or Audion (ex., ex.) .

Also, Devo.

Also, Devo.
Definitely. "That's Good", for instance, makes heavy use of the 101.

I'm fairly sure that there's a subgenre out there that your track is in, OP. Sounds like an European style. It's not a genre I know, so ...

You might want to try dubstep. Wild, animated music. Synesthetic. Here are some examples: Harmony by Eskmo, Moanerz by Rusko.

Play this reasonably loud on a system that can reproduce the bassline.

Best answer: Imho this is a job for Ishkur's electronic music guide (warning: Flash). Some more suggestions: Deadmau5 maybe? Justice?

Seconding Beatport. There's heaps of tracks there of varying genres that you can preview online and then buy to download. I've purchased off them for years and have never had any problems.

However, if we're talking about an 11 year old, you might want to be cautious of explicit language and drug references. Even though decent (in my opinion) techno doesn't have many lyrics, an innocent sounding track like "Bass Monkeys" can have a lot of ... umm... explicit content.

Best answer: FYI, that sounds nothing like a 303.

Yep, electro-house is what you're after. Check out the KP Ward mix on this page called Biscuits & Gravy. (And then check out the other mixes on that pageā€”at least some will be similar.)

There's something about that sentence that I find very sweet.

Best answer: Sounds a lot like some of Deadmou5's stuff http://www.myspace.com/deadmau5 :D

So, MySpace is cool again? I ask because of that deadmau5 link, and the Berklee students I passed the other day saying something like "Facebook's dead, it's all on MySpace these days".

You may consider this a cop out, but:

Ministry of Sound Addicted to Bass is a great compilation (several of them per year) that has that kind of music. They are mixed CDs but he could find the groups he likes and then go and seek out those albums.

Appreciate the heads up, but as long as it doesn't have something like the hard-to-explain moaning of More Human Than Human, a little swearing or talking about o-HIGH-o is OK. He actually laughs about the druggy lyrics in the 127 Hours soundtrack because they distract from the music.

Thanks for all the help. I worked for E-mu Systems for four years & had never heard of the SH-101! I also like Devo, but didn't know their music as well I had thought.
