affordable good microphone recommendations?

can anyone recommend a good microphone for singing the blues/rock, for home recording (not jamming with a live band) use, under $100?

wont be used for loud singing, if that makes any difference; mostly very low volume voice. Dont know if that matters for the sensitivity of the mic.

It need not be xlr or anything complicated, going into the 'mic in' jack on a vox mini 3 is good enough.

I looked thru older askmefi posts but the recommendations seem dated.

thanks!

Shure SM-58 for vocals, SM-57 for anything higher-intensity. Probably the same recommendations from the old questions, but there's good reason for that.

a 57 or 58 will serve you well as an all-around starter mic. Either one should be around $90-100 at a reputable store/website. Be wary of deals on ebay, craigslist, etc, there are a lot of fakes out there.

If you're going to be recording in a quiet, properly treated room, then you might want to look into a basic general-purpose condenser, but I will assume that this isn't the case.

Do you not have XLR inputs available?

If not, the USB Condenser Mic AT2020 is a great choice. I've used one before and they sound fine for the applications you're mentioning.

If you have a breakout box then I'd just go for the Shures. They sound good enough and they get used for just about every live setting you can think of.

I prefer the 57 for vocals but you need a windscreen or I guess a pop filter if you're recording. Something to note is that the 57 is 46 years old. Microphone technology isn't a particularly hot field at the moment and most audio engineers stick to the classics. An advantage to this is that you'll be able to resell your 57 years from now for a good price.

Nthing the 57, I have one and it works great. If you're recording you may or may not want a preamp, the 57 requires a fair amount of amplification into whatever recording setup you're using. ART makes a preamp for 30 or so bucks that would work until you can afford something better. And it will work without that, its just easier to get a good level sometimes with the preamp.

If you're buying this for live use, you won't need a preamp and I'd probably recommend the SM58 instead.
