I left a bag containing new shoes I purchased on a bus in San Francisco. I realize they're probably goners, but is there a number I can call to make sure?

Response by poster: In my despair over losing my new shoes, googling didn't even occur to me. Thank you brainmouse- I filed a report, hopefully somebody else doesn't decide they liked them more!

And maybe if they are gone and you used a credit card to buy them, you might get a chargeback. If you ask really, really nicely.

A chargeback? It's not the retailer's fault.

You're right. I wasn't thinking. I meant something more along the lines of a purchase protection.

Definitely check to see if your credit card offers purchase protection. You might just get your money back.

A roommate of mine once left a brand new pair of shoes on St. Mark's Place (Manhattan). We were halfway home on the subway when she realized she didn't have her new shoes, so we turned around and went back. The shoes were obviously gone from in front of the street vendor where she left them, but she was not willing to give up on them. (They were totally awesome leopard print patent strappy cork wedge sandals, completely hot shoes.). So we went back to the store where she'd just purchased the shoes, and told the manager the story. We asked him to keep an eye out for someone returning the shoes, and he said he would, but told us we we're crazy and we'd never see the shoes again.

Two days later, we got a call at home -- it was the store manager, and he said only three words: "We got him." He was as stunned as we were that the whole thing ended up working out, and it seemed to restore his faith in...something.

So, long story short, call the store. Let them know you lost a pair of shoes and see if they'll keep an eye out for someone returning them.
