Where should we live near Uptown Albuquerque?

At the end of May, the wife and I will be relocating from the Midwest to Albuquerque. Most of the details are taken care of, other than the major exception of where we will be living.
We will both be working in or near the Uptown area and I especially would prefer to be car-free. I am definitely okay with biking to and from work and/or using public transportation too.
I've looked through some of the previous ABQ threads, but I'd like some additional input for our situation.
We would love to find a house/condo/townhouse to rent, but I'm not sure how feasible that would be for our budget. $1000/month is the upper limit of what we could spend, ideally I'd like a little less than that. (I'm just going to assume these ABQ Uptown apartments are significantly more than that).

Albuquerque has an extensive system of bike paths (some are bike/pedestrian only, which is nice). Maybe look at the bike maps and take a look at where you'll be working and plan on where to live from that perspective. It's totally possible to find housing for less than $1000/mo in ABQ, depending on what you can live with.

There are a bunch of nice neighborhoods close to that area. Bear in mind that grocery shopping could be a chore if you are car free. The bus system is not that useful if you are trying to run errands since things like shopping can be spread out. If you do choose to live somewhat close to your work, the only Trader Joe's in Albuquerque is in that area.
You can get a decent place for under $1000, including a yard. Craig's List is ok but seems to full of apartment complex listings. I had good luck just walking around the neighborhood I was interested in and looking for signs. I would say to look at areas east of San Mateo Blvd. and west of Wyoming Blvd, both N. of Lomas Blvd. That would be a decent daily biking commute.
