DVD remote too hot to handle!

What's causing this DVD remote control to become too hot to handle?
I just purchased an inexpensive DVD player for a relative, and the player works fine. The remote that was included with it is another matter. I put 2 fresh AAA batteries in it, and started reading the instructions for it's operation...when I picked up the remote 1-2 minutes later, the battery box at the end of the remote had heated up to where it was painful to hold. I opened the box and saw that one battery had gotten so hot the plastic cover on it had begun to deform so I pried both batteries out. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this to happen? I've never experienced this before.

Sounds like there might be a dead short in the remote. Ever unthinkingly put a 9v battery in your pocket with coins? It heats up stupid hot and burns your leg. Same idea.

Response by poster: Thanks to both of you...that was the fastest repkly I've ever gotten here. I did try another set of batteries and the same thing happened, so back to Sears with the remote to get it changed out.
Thanks again!

Is it at all possible that one of the batteries was in backwards? Or that the batteries go in a non-traditional direction (ex. both facing the same way) such that you put them in wrong multiple times? In certain battery configurations, having one battery backwards could cause a short.

Sears likely won't have a remote in stock. Take the whole thing in, player, box, manual etc. when you go. They'll likely need to swap it all.

Yeah, I found out the hard way by only taking in the remote...D'OH! The sales associates of course used the opportunity to try to get me to spend more on a better quality DVD player because "we always have problems with that brand". When I asked why they carry it if they have so many problems with it, they said in unison "Corporate". So I felt a lot better about my decision to shop at Sears, "where America shops".
