One Night Only!

Its apparently Chicago night on AskMe. I'm in Chicago for one night only (near the corner of Randolph and Wacker) and I'm really tired. Nevertheless, I'd like to do something that says "Chicago". I'm at a conference all day tomorrow. What can I do tonight??

Best answer: Turn around. Oh hey, look, it's an Intelligentsia! Go in and get yourself a coffee. (Available only in Chicago. And technically they're in LA now, too, but whatever.)

You could also go to the Goat.

Food: Eat deep dish pizza, italian beef, or hot dogs (Lou Malnati's, Gino's East, Al's, Portillo's)
Theater: Go to Second City
Music: Go to a blues/jazz club (off the top of my head, Kingston Mines and House of Blues might have something tonight)
Sightseeing: Go have a drink at the Signature Lounge on top of the Hancock Tower

Well, what are you into? Food, music, drink, meeting people?

Well, as I mentioned, I'm pretty tired (my day started at 3:30 am). I'm kinda hungry. I don't like crowded places. I was disappointed that the art museums all closed at 5pm tonight - that would have been my first choice. I'm kinda shy. Not so much for the club/bar scene.

Response by poster: Also, I'm not quite sure how to best get around. Walk? I can see the El, but I don't see a stop for it. I haven't seen a cab.

You should be able to see the El if you look up from Randolph and Wacker, or go to State and find the Red Line or Dearborn to find the Blue Line (both are N-S streets just a few blocks east of where you are). You can get most places pretty easily from there.

It's a little more pricey, but maybe check out the Publican if you are adventurous. It would be a pretty cheap cab ride - cabs should be everywhere. The light in the middle with the numbers would be on if it's looking for a fare.

At a minimum, promise me you'll go for a walk! Chicago is a beautiful city with amazing architecture, and it's even nice weather out tonight! Go up Wacker, follow it east along the river. When you get to State street, turn right and see the Chicago Theater all lit up. When you get to Madison, go left. Go to Millenium park and check out the the bean, check out the music pavillion, check out the view. Then, go eat something delicious. There's a Giordanos just a couple blocks to the north for pizza. The Intelligentsia mentioned upthread is nearby as well.

When I was stuck in Chicago as a poor college student on an interview with a poor non-profit, I spent my evenings riding the El aimlessly, and found it very thrilling in a "I am so from Southern California/Ohio and this is The City and whooooohooooo!" kind of way.

I'll add to gueneverey's comment that Giordano's can be pretty up & down, quality-wise, but I was very happy the last time I chowed down on stuffed spinach pizza at the one mentioned above.

You'll definitely see cabs once you get to State Street.

Go to Millennium Park. It's on Michigan and Randolph. You'll see the Bean (Cloud Gate) and the fountains with the video faces spitting water, the Gehry bandshell, a great view and just generally be in a very beautiful part of the city.
