Comox Funsplosion?

What can a 2 1/2 year old do for kicks in Comox?

My wife is planning to fly with our 2 1/2 year old boy and 4 month old baby girl out to Comox, British Columbia to spend a week with her grandmother (Yes, I think my wife is crazy). She asked me to tap the Hivemind for any cool/fun/neat things to do with our son in Comox and the surrounding area. They will have car access for day trips. He is a super-smart kid who likes aquariums and zoos, and he also loves to run and play (as most kids do).

Any suggestions will be gratefully accepted!

Best answer: Your wife isn't crazy! She sounds like a fun, adventurous mother.

I think Vancouver Island is best for nature hiking and natural history type activities. She should go walking along the bay, maybe visit some trails and just wander around with the kids.

There is a walking tour of fossils in the area, but I'm not sure if it's suitable for a 2 1/2 year old, and I know it is a bit expensive. I almost went on the tour while I was out there, but opted to wander around by myself. Maybe look into the Courtenay Museum and Palaeontology Centre, they have some kids programs.

Best answer: Comox is a pretty small town, it's mostly the ski hill and a trouble fishery and forestry industry. You're not likely to find an aquarium or zoo closer than vancouver (more than 4hrs to Stanley Park)

The hill, though, is pretty great and gets a crap ton of snow. They have a tubbing park (Ozone) for those not quite up to getting skis on.

On the same afternoon one could go to a place like Kin Beach which, obviously, will be nothing like Winnipeg in feb. Tide pools abound. Elk Lake Falls could be interesting too.

Something else that could be interesting, if even for novelty depending upon patience and attention span, is the ferry to Powell River. Or the rather shorter ferry to Denman Island. There's also a train that runs to and from Victoria once a day. Both arrives from, and departs to, Victoria around noon IIRC.

There is also the Airforce Museum and Air Park as well as the Courtenay and District Museum and Palaeontology Centre.

All in all it's a neat little corner of the world. Pretty outdoorsy, pretty small town. I haven't been up island that far very often but I hope your family enjoy it as much as we have on our sojourns.

Best answer: One of my friends operates a bed and breakfast in the area, and she has a list of things to do on her web site. It really is a beautiful part of the world!
