Cheapest way to text / call to California cell phone from Canada?

My new friend lives in Southern California. She has an Android phone on Verizon, so she can call and text me as part of the plan she has.

I have an Iphone4 with Rogers. I'm looking for the best way to be able to call and text message her from that. The best way I've found is Skype (2.99 / month) for calling and 12.6 cents a text.

Might there be a free way anyone has found? Is there a better text message deal to be found?

Using skype to phone using skype time is I think $0.02 /minute anywhere within North America. This may or may not be better than the monthly plan.

Isn't the call to phone feature from Google Chat still free? It was last year.

Best answer: Use an email-to-text gateway for SMS (google will help you there) or just email and skip SMS completely, because honestly now.

Pay for Skype, it's worth it.

I am fairly certain that Google Voice would work here. Just get a Google number, and text/call using that number.

Response by poster: @kch: yes, it's $0.026 /minute plus a connection fee of $0.059 per call.

@reformed does Google chat work on an iphone?

Google Voice for your iPhone. Free text messages. Make sure you disable the SMS forwarding to your real number.

I have this on a Rogers iPhone 4 as well, and use it to text back and forth with my US contacts. Free for both sides of the conversation, and it works just like the built-in text app on the iPhone.

To everyone: Google Voice refuses to work in Canada as of yet for...really no good reason. But that's not an option here.

Telus includes free unlimited texts to the U.S. and Canada with all smartphone plans. Perhaps Rogers has an option like that? I know Rogers is about the worst of all options for Canadian providers, but if you must have an iphone, then perhaps they have a plan that supports this...
