Why Can't Wii Be Friends?

How do you play Mario Kart Wii online multiplayer with your registered "Wii Friends"? We have been inside the "Room" but there seems to be no way to start a private race from there. We know it's possible to play random strangers through WFC, but WFC can't be the only way to play with our "Wii Friends"...right?

Whoever first started the"room" has the ability to start a game. It's an option that's available at the bottom of the screen, like the button that allows you to "say" things. But, again, this is an option available only to the person who first started the room, at least in my experience.

WFC just means you're connecting to the internet. You have to make a room and invite your friend to it, if memory serves, but you have to go through the WFC menu because you're connecting to the internet in order to do so.

Response by poster: Okay, I figured it out. It looks like meese is right about the room's creator being the one who controls the start of the game, but what the Wii interface doesn't make obvious is that you have to hit "Close" once you're done conversing with your friends. Hitting "Close" does two things: it prevents other friends from joining, and it launches a new purple window of race options; selecting one of them starts the racing.
