What is the best shampoo to use for gray hair?
My mother's hair has a yellow tinge to it that it didn't use to have. I'm assuming it's the shampoo and conditioner she's using. What would you recommend? We are in Canada.

there's also 'purple shampoo' made specifically for this purpose, such as Clairol Shimmer Lights ... not sure what the Canadian equivalent would be ...

Aveda's Blue Malva shampoo and conditioner are very nice. You can even leave the conditioner on your hair for a while, but don't go overboard with it. Eventually you can get a blue appearance from any shampoo like that.
I like the idea of a clarifying shampoo, maybe a few times first, then switch to the blue or purple.

Daddy-O by Lush. When I first went gray and before I started dying it again, this is what I used and it was great. It smells good and helps cut down on the yellows.

Clairol Shimmer Lights - use both the shampoo and the conditioner and leave on for a little bit. Same with the Aveda Blue Malva. In the States the Clairol would be at a beauty supply type store, the Aveda at a specialty type store. She may need to alternate with a more moisturizing conditioner, as these aren't really hydrating to me.
There are also drops at the beauty supply stores that are just purple coloring - I have added those to other shampoos before but have not been as happy as I was with the two options above.
So basically yes, clarifying shampoo for a couple of days and then a good purple shampoo and conditioner.

If she's using a dandruff shampoo with any percentage of coal tar in it, that will give her hair a yellowy tint.
Also, if the water has a high percentage of iron, that may be giving her the yellowing. All of the over-the-counter shampoos formulated for gray hair have bluing in them, or she could use a bit of laundry bluing, highly diluted, as a rinse.
