Bogie's infinite wisdom

I keep finding variations on this quote, ascribed to Humphrey Bogart: "The trouble with the world is that everyone in it is three drinks behind." What is the origin and actual wording of the quote?

Best answer: The earliest written source I can find is in his 1966 biography by Joe Hyams; the biography written by his son claims that Bogart said it in 1950.

There seems to be a similar phrase - "nature meant me to be a great man, but left me three drinks behind" - which is referenced in a few 19th century works on Google Books. Here and here.
