How can I make a pushpin type map that will help me to track the location of something. Specifically, community entered information (more information inside)

Hi, some friends and I are trying to make a map that will be linked to or integrated with a facebook group to track the location of something. Members should be able to add a pushpin and remove the previous one (hopefully automatically when the new one is added). Any suggestions on how to do this?

You can do this through Google Maps -> My Maps (there is a link from the main Google Maps page).

If you are signed in to a Gmail account then this allows you to create an store a map and you can put places (signified by different color dots) or lines on the maps as you like, I am sure you can do this by creating an account as well if you don't have Gmail. You can share it with other people and they can edit too, and you can also make it public.

It will not auto remove the path, but it only take two seconds to delete the last spot/line from the map.

Response by poster: Hmm, ok. That works. Is there any way to make one where people can add locations via SMS?

For SMS, if you had access to a web server, and there is a PHP script that allows you to add a pin, then it would be relatively trivial to set it up.

Essentially, you would set up a PHP script to run which would process email's that contain the new coordinates. You could then set up a Google Voice number that forwards to the email account.

It sounds like you might want a service like CrowdMap (a fairly easily to use service which evolved from the Ushahidi platform/its component pieces). Maybe too much, but its the first thing that came to mind that might not involve a lot of low-level configuring on your part.
