Help me find some cubes!

Making a Yoshimoto photo cube. Where in Seattle can I find (or have made) wooden cubes, roughly 2" per side?

I'd consider doing it in my (very limited) shop, but it's for my wife's birthday and probably couldn't pull off the whole process of buying materials, trial and error, frustrated swearing, etc. without arousing suspicion. Type of material is less important than ending up with true cubes, so that the final product fits together as closely as possible. Even plastic would be OK, though the weight of wood would be nice. Anyone in the hive have a recommendation for how I could get this done? Thanks!

Best answer: If type of material is unimportant, the people at TAP (Westlake at Broad) plastics can sell you acrylic cubes in a variety of sizes, and I'm sure they'll be happy to instruct you on what glue, etc. would be the most appropriate.

For wood cubes, I'd start calling craft supply stores around town.

Best answer: I've seen a selection of wooden shapes at a Michaels craft store. I'd bet that similar craft stores like Jo-Ann's would have the same.

You could also go to a toy store to get some (non-embossed) alphabet cubes and peel off the pictures.

I second the Michaels suggestion. I have made these before and just picked up some small blocks from a craft store.

For the 'have made' option, you could use Etsy. If you want wood, you'll probably find it easier to obtain slightly smaller blocks -- say 1 3/4" per side. This is because kiln-dried hardwoods thicker than 2" are expensive and rarely needed, so it's less likely a shop or craftsperson will have a scrap of 10/4 (2 1/2" thick) rough lumber lying around from which to make 2" finished blocks.

I'm planning a much simpler photo project for my nieces, and ordering the cubes online. I looked at a couple of different places, and can't find the note I made that had the price comparisons a shops, so I can't be sure I'm recommending you the "best" choice... but I think this one was pretty good.

Response by poster: Thanks to everyone for the answers. I hadn't thought of the craft stores. The acrylic idea is interesting, but ultimately too expensive. Wish me luck!
