Best way to research an area before buying a house there?

Any great resources to determine the best place to buy a home?

I'd like to buy some property, either a house or a condo and find myself a little frustrated with the cost of living in NYC. There appear to be some bargains out there but most of them are in fairly remote or otherwise undesirable parts of the greater NY metro area.

I'd like to do some research on an area before even contacting a broker or an owner about their property. I found this website Best Places To Live that looks like it gives me some of what I am looking for but I'm not sure how much I can trust this data on its own.

What do MeFi-ers recommend?

There's nothing wrong with working with an experienced buyer's agent. It's a real estate agent who will work for you, but is paid by the seller. Find one you like, whom you are confident has the experience you need, and go from there.
