Recommend me some well-made lesbian feature films. Ones I have liked: Go Fish, When Night is Falling, Bound, Desert Hearts, High Art, The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love.

Better Than Chocolate isn't bad, and I enjoyed If These Walls Could Talk 2. But I'm a Cheerleader is fun, and probably the best of a sorry lot of lesbian movies I watched back in the day.

Response by poster: @hought20 I liked If These Walls Could Talk 2, as well. Wasn't so keen on Better than Chocolate (the plot felt forced) and But I'm a Cheerleader (too kitsch).

Tipping the Velvet is more of a three-part series but is pretty great.

Lost and Delirious is one of my wife's favorite movies.

F*cking Amal, Swedish and SO GOOD. It has an American English title but it's lame and I don't remember it. I also loved Kissing Jessica Stein, but I'm straight and I know that's a bit controversial since it's about characters "trying on" a same sex relationship. But that happens too and I think they were realistic about it.

Fingersmith is based on a work by the same author as Tipping the Velvet. It's a three-part BBC series. The plot gets a bit convoluted, but it's pretty good nonetheless. Also, not nearly as much nudity as I was hoping for.

Saving Face is probably my favorite romance out of the lot I've seen; Bound is one of my favorite movies, but I tend to think of it more as a mob/heist movie than a love story.

Fucking Amal = Show Me Love in the North American release.

Response by poster: Liked: Fucking Amal, Fire, Fingersmith, Kissing Jessica Stein

Didn't like: Tipping the Velvet (a bit gauchely done), Imagine Me and You (didn't buy the romance), Lost and Delirious (plot too contrived), Fingersmith

Haven't seen (yay!): Salmonberries, Saving Face.

Thank you very much for all the suggestions. I think the common themes amongst the lesbian films I like are they they are fairly low-key, not camp, and I believe in the romance.

Wonderful lesbian subplot in Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her.

Also, Monster, of course.

Has anyone mentioned Waiting for the Moon, which is about Gertrude and Alice? Slow-moving but quite lovely.

However, it has *all* the camp.

Response by poster: Thanks for the shower of recommendations.

Going to check out Saving Face, Waiting for the Moon, The Midwife's Tale.

@rtha Where can I find a copy of By Hook or By Crook?
posted by maryrosecook at 9:51 AM on October 29, 2010

Amazon has it; I bought a copy at....Amoeba, or Streetlight, maybe, in San Francisco.

@rtha ugh. HATED By Hook or By Crook. So. Awful. Glad to know it found an audience somewhere, but ugh... not with me.

Saving Face was charming.

I started to watch Steam last week but ran out of time. It's still in my Netflix queue though so I can finish it. I like it but the love story line has just barely been introduced.

I didn't care for Puccini For Beginners, but you may. Similarly... Girl Play.

You might also consider: All Over Me, Loving Annabelle and D.E.B.S.

My Summer of Love is a great movie about girls and intimacy (which may or may not actually be lesbian). It's kind of hard to explain, but you still may enjoy it.

I want to 2nd All Over Me. This is a great film reflecting the general 90s mood and New York, which just happens to be about a girl understanding her sexuality.

I'm surprised no one has recommended the other two movies by High Art's writer/director: Laurel Canyon and The Kids Are All Right. They're just as non-campy and elegant as High Art was.

It's been quite a few years since I saw it, but I remember enjoying She Must be Seeing Things.

I really liked Boys on the Side. I am not really sure if it qualifies as a Lesbian movie as that is but one aspect of the plot. Mary Louis Parker was amazing in this role and the music was beyond compare. Read some reviews if you wish as the movie was not without its flaws but I would give this one thumbs up.

Seconding Heavenly Creatures. I've seen it a zillion times. Brilliant first role for Kate Winslet.

I thought 2 Seconds was great, but that's probably at least in part because I love bikes and bike shops.

I haven't seen Love My Life yet, but have been meaning to; it may be a little weird or clichéd-feeling out of its context (Japan is pretty different from North America or Europe). Spider Lilies might be a little too over-the-top for you.

D.E.B.S.

I've seen a lot of gay movies, and this is one that is actually well written and acted.
To me, the mark of a good gay movie is one that would still be good if the two lead characters were straight (aka - pelase tell me that you being gay is not the only reason I am watching this movie).

I second the suggestions Imagine Me & You, and Kissing Jessica Stein.

But I'm a Cheerleader (1999) is one of my favourites.

It's funny, sweet, and warm.

Kissing Jessica Stein. Not awesome, but pretty charming, and certainly worth your time.

A few that haven't been mentioned:

The Hunger (A classic lesbian vampire movie from 1983: Catherine Deneuve, Susan Sarandon, David Bowie, Bauhaus...)
Unveiled (Fremde Haut) (I thought this was just a good movie, lesbian or no.)
Itty Bitty Titty Committee (slightly low-rent production values, and a small dose of camp, but it's in-group camp and I'm a movie snob and found it enjoyable.)

AfterEllen is a good source of lesbian movie reviews.
