A friend is looking for a fat-friendly general practitioner in Austin, TX. (Someone who subscribes to the idea of health at every size would be ideal — though really it doesn't matter how they label themself, as long as they're generally sensitive about body-image/weight/food issues. We've seen this fat friendly health professionals list, but the one GP listed in Austin is apparently no longer practicing here.) Suggestions?

This should go without saying, but "Your friend should go on a diet" is not a helpful answer. If you want to participate in a shouting match about fat people, you'll have to go somewhere else. Thanks.

Have you considered calling that doctor's new practice (I am assuming they've moved) and asking for a recommendation?

It also might be helpful if people understood what HAES was before making judgments about it and offering non-helpful-advice. This link might explain why someone wanted to find a doctor who was willing to embrace HAES, and not for the reasons you already wrongly assume.

I would try looking for women-centered medical practices and asking for recommendations.

You could also ask in the Fatshionista community on LJ, or try searching its archives to see if there had been some discussion already:
community.livejournal.com/fatshionista/

It would give you a better reception than the one you will get here.

Seconding posting this question to Fatshionista, as I know they have members in Austin.

She might want to contact Abby Lentz of Heartfelt Yoga. She's one of the go-to folks for plus-sized fitness in Austin, and she might be able to point your friend in the right direction.

The HAES Registry only lists one health care practitioner in Texas and she's a licensed dietitian, not a GP. If you widen the search results there's a hit for a psychotherapist in Austin who might know of a GP in her area that she could recommend.

There's also a hit here in an LJ community for a fat-friendly (ish?) family practise that's located in Austin.

Hope that helps some?

Response by poster: A Mefite who prefers to remain anonymous emailed me to say:
I asked a couple of family members and they recommended Dr. Theresa Pugh, of the Jefferson Street Family Practice. She's never said a word to either of them about losing weight, which many other doctors have hassled them about.

Response by poster: My friend says she visited Dr. Pugh and had a good experience. Thanks, everyone.
