"I'm just here for the cupcakes, dude. Chill!"

A friend of mine, in a bout of frustration, recently posted this challenge: " Name one Hollywood horror movie which does NOT contain the line, "WHAT DO YOU WANT (FROM ME)??!!!", usually screamed by the protagonist at the antagonist." There must be several! I thought it would be funny to present him with a list, and I hope you can help me. (Would be funnier if the movies were not-very-arthousey.) Thanks!

There are probably a lot more movies where this isn't said than ones where it is. You're going to have a difficult time compiling this list, I'm afraid.

The original Japanese version of The Eye, which is also just a damn good movie. I'm not 100% sure that she never says it, but I don't remember a scene in which that would make sense. There's no antagonist, just a condition affecting the protagonist. So no one to yell WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME? at. I haven't seen The Eye, but it's possible this is the case there, too.

It's not in Night of the Living Dead, either the original or the good remake or the bad remake. I don't remember that trope in Blair Witch, either.

I can't remember it appearing in any of the Harry Potter or original Star Wars films, and I bet it doesn't appear in Star Trek I or VII, at a minimum. If it appears in Lord of the Rings, Boromir or one of his close family members probably said it, so check The Two Towers, because Faramir's appearance is brief and his dad isn't around to up the angst. I bet it isn't in Madeline, I don't think anyone said it in Serenity (having hashed through most of that stuff in the series,) and I can't recall a scene with it in Independence Day or Beauty and the Beast or Matilda. I believe they avoid the exact words, at least, in 1776.

Wow you can tell what kind of movies I watch.

I'm almost entirely sure no one ever spoke directly to the xenomorph in Alien.

"What do you want?" is a slasher movie trope, not a universal horror trope. There are lots of horror movies that don't have a singular, sentient killer, and asking "What do you want?" just wouldn't make any sense. Jaws is a pretty good example.

I agree with FoB, you would need to limit it to slasher flicks. Even then, I'm sure there are numerous examples.

That makes sense, yeah.

If you have more suggestions of slasher movies that fit the bill I'd be grateful. Otherwise, I'm still pleased with the suggestions, thanks everyone!

(I rarely watch horror movies, and if I do I can't remember them.)

I don't have the script to Sleepaway Camp memorized, but I'm pretty sure there is no scene like that. It's a slasher film but for the most part the victims don't see it coming, so there's not a point where characters are shouting at the hidden killer.

I suggest also looking for horror movies that do not have "jeans and boots". A film industry insider pointed out to me years ago that all horror movies have "jeans and boots", even if it's just the costuming (I'm not sure what else it could be). I believe it's as true as "What do you want from me?!".

Your friend's challenge echoes my belief that all teen coming-of-age movies contain the line "For the first time in my life I've found something that's real!".

It's a slasher film of a sort (at least it nods to the genera), but I don't remember it being said in Death Proof.

All the nightmare on elm street movies

Actually, at least two of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies apparently contain the "What do you want from me?" line.
