Could somebody please help me with my new headset and speakers?

Okay, so I bought these new headphones equipped with a microphone from Best Buy, along with new speakers for my e-machine running on Windows XP. I accidentally destroyed my speakers with a headphone for my Rosetta Stone program, and so I got this new headset as a result. For some reason, neither the headset nor the speakers work even though I've followed all of the instructions as to how to install them and everything. The only instructions there were for the headset were to plug the two little prongs into the sound card, one for the microphone and the other for the headphones. It doesn't work. The speakers are an insignia 2.0 powered speakers and the headset is a plantronics audio 355. The headset is supposed to work for speech recognition software along with phone calls over the internet and stuff like that. Could somebody please hep me?

What color was the connectors you plugged in your headset and speakers? Normally it should be pink for your microphone and lime green for your speakers (see).

test both the old speakers and the new headset (ignoring the mic jack) on an ipod or other device with a headphone jack.

if either works, you may have a problem with your audio driver. the emachines site will have an updated driver specific to your machine, it is worth trying that. also mess around with the advanced options on the volume control (start/run/sndvol32), there is probably more than one volume slider which will affect the output.

Response by poster: Thanks guys, y'all have been a real help. I managed to get my speakers working and the headphones on my headset working; it turned out that I had plugged the little prongs into the wrong connectors. However, my microphone still doesn't work, which seems odd given that I have that prong connected to the little red connector beside the green one with a little symbol of a microphone with sound waves emanating from above it. Previously with my old headset that came with my Rosetta Stone software, I had both the headphone and microphone prongs connected into two little yellow connectors on the front of the machine at the bottom with the symbol of some headphones below one and a microphone symbol below the other. These were the two connectors I had been plugging my headset into earlier and neither the headphones nor the microphone were working. I have run a test of my hardware on the control panel and it was unable to detect anything I said, so I know it's not that it's incompatible with the Rosetta Stone software or anything. Got any more ideas?
