Clothes. $?

I live in Philadelphia and I want to sell my clothes.

I have four closets full of clothes and only one body to wear them on. I want to go to a consignment shop and sell some of the clothes I don't wear as much anymore, because I am a student and I would like to try to make some money before I give the remainder to good will. Everything is in good shape and reasonably stylish or interesting. Some of it is "designer," some of it is not. But where do I go? How much do shops pay for clothes here? I have no idea how this works.

selling it piece by piece on ebay will probably net you the most money if the clothing is good. anything you sell as a lot will be reduced in price, be it at a brick & morter or ebay.

also, you don't get paid immediately at a consignment store.

2nd eBay if the stuff is nice.

Buy some stuff to build up your rating. Learn how to take good photos and write good descriptions. If this sounds like too much work, consider that a consignment shop will take 60% from you and the items may sell for less.

A word to the wise for eBay or consignment - if it is older than 2 years, you might have problems. I was shocked to see that new with tags stuff 3-4 years old wouldn't sell.

Response by poster: Hey--maybe I shouldn't have used the word "consign." I guess what I'm really looking for is a brick-and-mortar store in Philadelphia that will paw through a bag of clothes and buy some of them and then I never have to deal with the store again. Ebay costs way, way more in time and effort than I am able to spend. Reiterate: Physical second-hand clothing store in Philadelphia that buys clothing from people.

Best answer: Definitely Buffalo Exchange. Whatever they don't pay you for, they'll give to charity. Philly's BE is quite nice, though I've never sold there; only shopped. They also pay you immediately.

Note: They generally only take in-season clothes, and do tend to take more fashionable things, since that's obviously more likely to sell.

It's consignment, but Greene Street for your designer and favored-label clothes.

Seconding Buffalo Exchange. Also, you're within spitting distance of a few Plato's Closet locations, which also follow the Buffalo Exchange paradigm (paw through/select/cash/yay!). There is also an indie sell-yer-clothes place on Old York Rd. by the Willow Grove Mall (a 20-minute drive) called Closet Exchange. If they are DESIGNER-designer stuff, there is at least one place on Chestnut St. around 18th that I can think of (sorry, the name escapes me) that does "designer resale"), which may get you more bang for your buck than Buffalo Exchange.

I was just coming here to recommend Buffalo Exchange, too!
