iPhone in Boston

Do I have a snowball's chance in hell of getting a new iPhone tomorrow (in Boston) if I didn't order it ahead of time? If so, how?

You might try looking at a Walmart early in the day — they're the only retailer that didn't take preorders, at least officially.

Even people withe preorders are not guaranteed devices tomorrow. Still, it's possible they'll have some left at the end of the day. You could try showing up a couple hours before closing, get in line, be super nice, and see what happens.

Wear something tight. Smile a lot. Pray.

I walked into my local Apple store on iPad day and managed to get one. I'm gonna take a ride over in the morning and just see what happens.

I doubt it.

clango may have managed to get the iPad with some incredible luck, but the install base for iPhones is much, much larger. Like, magnitudes.

Get to the store around 8. I'd say you have pretty good chances.

The stores are open at 7, they'll be moving the line through as fast as they can process credit cards. Apple stores are generally provisioned a lot of phones for events like this. When I bought my original iPhone on launch day there was a line literally around the block when they went on sale. An hour later it was gone, I walked in, bought one and walked out in 2 minutes.

The official release at the AT&T stores has been changed to Tuesday. Not sure if this applies to Apple stores as well.

(Though my prognostication on this one was way off. The line at the downtown San Francisco Apple store is still two blocks long at noon. Apple is serving them lunch. However it looks like if you got in line by now you'll get a phone. Just maybe not the model you want.)

The apple store in the Northshore mall in Peabody still has a few non-reserved 32GB available.
