iphone 4.0 erased my sim card?! Help!

Last night I let itunes upgrade the software in my iphone 3g to version 4.0. This morning my phone is only usable for emergency calls. I did a hard restart of the phone- didn't work.

My itunes and computer (windows xp) don't recognize that I have a device plugged into it.

1. Any ideas?

2. I know I should contact customer service, but which one? AT&T or Apple? When each company tries to pawn me off on the other, who do I insist help me?

Since this seems to be a SIM issue, I'd begin with AT&T. Good luck.

Looking at what mcwetboy posted, it looks like a restore would help. If Windows isn't recognizing the device, try putting the phone in recovery mode, then plug it in your computer. It should offer a restore, which will put the settings back as they were when you last synced, but with the latest software.

Response by poster: Well, I came to work and plugged it in here. My itunes on my work computer recognized the phone and updated it successfully. I probably should have tried that first before wasting a question, but at least I learned of a couple of new (to me) places to look for help if anything like this happens again, so thank you very much!

When you get home, if your computer still isn't recognizing the iPhone, try removing and reinstalling iTunes. Let us know if that doesn't resolve it for you.

Are you using a dock? I found with my old computer, if I plugged my iPhone in through the dock, it would continuously give me errors when trying to update. However, if I plugged the USB cable directly into the phone, everything worked fine (>_<;) [Now I have a 21.5" iMac and everything is honkey-dory (^_^) ]

Response by poster: Just-in-case-anyone-else-has-this-issue update: when I got home, I plugged the phone in to a different USB port (#2) and my computer/itunes recognized it. I synced, unplugged and plugged it back in to the previous USB port (#1) and it was recognized again. Very strange that the update would make port #1 "dead" to the phone, but no one ever said I knew anything about the inner machinations of computers.
