I want to use an English language handheld GPS in Japan for walking travel. Which brands provide such maps, since my knowledge of kanji is non-existent?

google maps has a lot of place names written using the English alphabet. if you are going to be in Japan for a while rent a phone with a data plan and a gps built in. An iphone, symbian based phones, and windows mobile phones.

The maps you buy from UUD work on Garmin-compatible GPSes.

I used the road and topo maps on my trip to Japan, though they may be missing walking trails.
