Can you recommend me some turn-based, in-browser and multiplayer online games?

My friend and I both work jobs with long periods of idleness and would like to play games against each other during downtime. We especially like strategy games but all suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Kingdom of Loathing is great, and I'm pretty sure it has a battle mode. It's an RPG, though, so expect leveling and a bit of a time investment.

You can play clones of Carcassonne or Settlers of Catan at AsoBrain

If you've never played go it's easy to learn, but very difficult to master.

The KGS Go Server (requires java) for faster pace play.
The Dragon Go Server for slower pace play.

Conqueror Game. Basically Risk, with various tweaks.

Tactics arena is like chess in a fantasy world. Knights, clerics, assassins, archer, pyromancer, witch, and siren. It's well thought out, easy to learn lifetime to master and all that.

Seconding Kingdom of Loathing, for it is awesome, although it can be an epic time-suck. Like, epic.

Someone implemented freeciv (the freeware clone of Civilization II) as an in-browser online multiplayer game. Only tried it briefly, but it seemed to be identical to freeciv, but without the cute animations.

Echo Bazaar. Browser-based, Twitter-connected, turn-limited, card-influenced RPG through the streets of Fallen London -- a gas-lit London stolen by bats and taken over by mysterious hooded Masters. Very well written, not too much of a time-suck (by design) and it does have a Fighting mode.

Roborunner is a well implemented Roborally clone.

Urban Dead is one of my favorites. If you want to play against each other, maybe one can play a human and another can play a zombie.

Kingdom of Loathing is indeed n awesome timesuck. Plus it's hilarious.

Neptune's Pride is the new hotness.
It apparently can take a while for games to finish though.
Rockpapershotgun did a gameplay diary if that sort of thing interests you. The first of seven parts is here.

Thirding Kingdom of Loathing. It's a serious time sink, but well worth it.

Kingdom of Loathing is great, and I'm pretty sure it has a battle mode.
It has a PvP minigame, but that's pretty dreadful. The co-operative play in clan basements is good, but the whole game is deep down a single player experience. A pretty good experience, and perfect for downtime, especially if you need to put it down at a moments notice to get back to work.

Urban Dead mentioned above is good for a laugh. Organising break-ins to chew on harmans bra!nz is quite satisfying.

Wigbl is a reimplentation of Nexus War (previously). It's in Beta, so there's skills still being added and bugs being squashed, but it is playable. It's like an expanded version of Urban Dead, with separated classes, more skills, more realistic maps, more character slots, and so on and so forth.
