hello 30 group beach vacation

Where should we travel to for our group's thirtieth birthday (beach) vacation?

My best friends from college and I are turning 30 next year! We want to go on a vacation to celebrate. Where would you suggest? We are thinking about renting a house somewhere near a beach. Some of us will want to engage in activities during the day; others require only a beer and some sunshine. We will be 8-12 people, no kids. We're thinking a 4 or 5-day vacation, and ideally, will not spend 2 full days traveling to and from.

Caveats:
1. We are coming from both the east and west coasts, and need airfare to be reasonable
2. We'd like to keep the total cost per person around $1000, max $1500
3. There are 2 teachers in our group, so we need to travel during a holiday weekend (we're thinking MLK weekend or the latter half of President's day)
4. Currently under consideration: Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Mexico

Dominican Republic -- decent resorts there too.

Tulum. Tons of rentals on VRBO. Beaches are great. Cheap or not cheap food options. Tons of stuff to do. Easy to get there. Search AskMe for tulum.

I had a really fabulous time with a group about that size in Puerto Rico a couple of years ago. We stayed in San Juan, which was great because there was lots of nightlife and sightseeing but it's also easy to get to places outside the city like El Yunque (national forest, gorgeous, craggy, jungly mountains).

We rented a few condos in this really nice, quiet neighborhood with a lovely beach. I forget the name of the neighborhood, but it was near the Parque Barbosa. The condos we rented were, I think, between $100-150/night and each would hold two couples or 2-3 singles. They each had a living room and kitchen - all in all, it was a pretty great set up and I would definitely recommend them. Send me a MeMail if you're interested.

Response by poster: thanks for the advice! We decided on Playa del Carmen (Mexican Riveria). I spoke to a travel agent who told me DR flight prices were out of our range. We narrowed it down to Puerto Rico or Mexico, and the group chose Mexico. Ultimately, we went with an all-inclusive resort - with a group of 8-10, planning meals (and cleanup!) seemed like it would create difficulties rather than let us relax.
