Victuals For Nuptials In Portland, Me

WeddingInMaineFilter: I'm getting married in October in Portland, ME. We've got a venue, but that's all. I'd like to find a caterer who's creative and interesting and interested. We're easy going, but we'd really like to serve food that's good and not terribly boring. We're open to food from our cultures (puerto rican and irish) or others; we can go simple or sophisticated (but not super expensive); off the wall or on the way to traditional. We just don't want to eat bland crap. So: know any creative caterers in or near Portland, Maine?

How big a reception are we talking? We had ours upstairs at Bull Feeney's, the food was great and it was nice cozy reception. Certainly not the place for more than maybe 80 people or so, and not if you want to dance.

I can recommend A Moveable Feast. They have some sample menus to give some general ideas but they are flexible and creative if you want to really customize something. We used them to cater for a group of about 30 on a schooner and based on that they have become a favorite caterer at my workplace.

I've always gotten the impression Black Tie was the go-to for this sort of thing. They have a cafe on Commercial St, so you can check out their food without committing to anything. Food there is quite good.

At my last job we used Aurora Catering all the time and I was always very happy with them. She's big into local/slow food.

Have you tried the Maine boards on The Knot? They might be more helpful. I would also check with your venue, they might have a list available. You might even want to check out the websites of other local venues to see if they have lists available online. Don't be afraid to check out any restaurants you like in the area and see if they do catering.

Response by poster: Thanks for all the responses. I've set up meetings so far with these caterers, and I'll get back to you to let you know who we chose, or I'll post more if these don't work out. Linked below for future brides and grooms:

Aurora Provisions
Kitchen Chicks Catering

I have calls in to Black Tie, as was mentioned above, as well as 111 Maine.

My fiance does not seem moved by A Moveable Feast, but I've heard good things. I'm also going to look into less traditional caterers and restaurants. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!

Response by poster: I forgot to mention Swan's Way, who are actually in Camden, who are far away, probably way too expensive, and already busy catering PopTech. But the food looks beautiful.
